Book Title: Crown of Midnight

Book Author: Sarah J. Maas

Good Reads Synopsis: An assassin’s loyalties are always in doubt but her heart never wavers

Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become the King’s Champion. But she is far from loyal to the crown. Though she hides her secret vigilantly, her deadly charade becomes difficult when she realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. No one is above questioning her allegiance—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then, one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie … and whom she is willing to fight for.

My Thoughts So Far:

I am loving book 2 in this series so far. I am enjoying it much more than book 1 (though I really loved Throne of Glass), and I am so surprised at all the twists and turns I keep finding! Maas has a superb writing style! She is able to capture story recap from the previous book without it being awkward or feeling forced. She has a way of making certain things feel predictable, but then twisting them so they are still unpredictable!

We have some familiar characters from book 1, that have stayed true to who they are. And we have some new characters that fit right in to the story, and add depth and intrigue. We have a few characters with secrets and surprises, and we have a seemless continuation of the story lines from the previous book.

There is so much passion in this book. Crown of Midnight has a lot of depth and jaw dropping moments. And, that ending to part 1, I have no words! I am so glad we decided to continue with the series and I cannot wait to keep reading this book!

Favorite Quote So Far:
“Concealed beneath a black mask and hood, she willed herself to melt in to the shadows, to become nothing more than a slip of darkness.”

Q & A with Alex:

Me:  What was your reaction to Celaena’s secret about her assassination targets?

Alex: I was happy! I really didn’t think, that she you could go through with it! And I am happy that I was right. Somehow it would have destroyed my picture of her, if she just went through with the assassinations.

Me: I found it really intriguing. It made me love her even more, and has me wondering if she was doing this before she was enslaved.

Me: 2. Did you suspect Nehemia in the plot against the king?

Alex: In fact i did. Somehow all the talks that Nehemia had with Celaena gave me a strange feeling. Somehow I felt, that Nehemia had secrets, she didn’t want to say and that made her suspicious. I still liked her and Celaena but I had this weird feeling in my stomach. And I was right.

Me: I did indeed. She was so full of secrets and intrigue from the moment we met her. It was definitely set up for us to be suspicious of Nehemia, but I did not expect what came of it.

Me:  What are your feelings toward Roland at the moment?

Alex: He’s bad news. Definitely. I guess he is written that way on purpose. That we think he is bad and that something will happen. I am not sure, what’s his deal, but I don’t like him and I hope, that he will behave. But this is Sarah J. Maas, so you never know!

Me: I definitely don’t trust him, but I am now wondering if he is going to turn out to be an ally. I have learned to expect the unexpected with the obvious with Maas.

Make sure to head over to Alex’s blog at Coffee Loving Bookaholic to see her post and to read her half of the Q & A! Also, keep your eyes in the comment section of both posts for Kathy at Books & Munches to join in!

  1. 1. What was your reaction to Celaena’s secret about her assassination targets?
I knew she would be different since she seemed to get more human than “a killing machine” by the end of Throne of Glass. But I honestly didn’t expect that she simply.. wouldn’t kill them? Seems risky!

    2. Did you suspect Nehemia in the plot against the king?
I thought it would be weird if she wouldn’t be part of it in one way or another. In the end the king still is her enemy. It simply wouldn’t make sense if she wouldn’t try to rebel against him and find a way to get rid of his tirany.

    3. What are your feelings toward Roland at the moment?
Bad news. No other opinion. He seems to.. slimey, happy and.. I don’t know. I just don’t like him at all.
Although, if I look back at Maas and her plot twists.. He might end up exactly what I don’t expect him to be?
    But no. Don’t think so.

    1. 1. I totally agree. I really am wondering if she has been doing this all along. I know you said she may just be so good at killing that she was able to do it with ease, but I feel like it would make an intriguing twist to have one of those from before she was enslaved come back to bite her in the ass.

      2. I suspected her all along, but I never thought she was a bad guy, I wanted to see her follow through with her plans because I really dislike the king!

      3. My feelings exactly. I distrust him 100% but am now wondering if he will be an ally, or at least help someone in a good way without even knowing it, lol.

      1. 1. Have to agree that it would be an intriguing twist but.. I don’t know; to me it doesn’t feel like that’s the case. Curious to see which one of us is going to end up being right, haha.
I would, however, like to see someone from her past pop up to give her some trouble!

        2. If there’s a bad guy between those two, it’s definitely the king. Nehemia obviously had her secrets but.. I do believe that she did everything out of love for her country and people.

        3. We’ll have to wait and see! In the end, he only popped up occasionally. I’m curious to see whether or not he’ll be present even more and what he’ll do.. Hopefully show his true colors because I want to know what he’s up to, haha.

      2. 1. YES! Either way, I think her past is still going to come haunt her some more. I don’t really know if I am wanting to be right or not. I like her more, knowing she is trying to be moral, but I also liked knowing she was a bad ass assassin, lol.

2, I feel the same. I am really honestly hoping for a miracle with her and Elena. There was that one short scene. What if this was all planned?

        3. I know! It is bugging me not knowing if he is truly bad or a friend in disguise.

      3. 1. I want to be right, haha. Just imagining what kind of enemies she might have made during her actual assassin-period.. Definitely sounds interesting! And it might make for some action-packed chapters as well. Never saying no to those!

        2. I think it was planned as well; that Nehemia knew perfectly what was going to happen. Hopefully there’ll be some kind of safety-net but.. I don’t want to hope for it. I don’t want to be disappointed about it, haha.

        3. SAME!

      4. 1. I think that would be so interesting and action packed to have someone from that period show up! What if…What if Nox comes back and was secretly someone affected by the death of one of her targets? I still think he will come back in to the story line!

        2. I know. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I loved her and their friendship and I want to see more of her!

  2. Ahhh, I’m so excited to see you’re continuing! I think Celaena’s decision about the assassinations definitely made me love her more. I respected her a lot more than if she had gone through with it. Can’t wait to see your thoughts on the second half! 😀

  3. I haven’t read this series yet, I actually clicked this post because my friend asked me if I wanted to buddy read with her and I agreed having no idea what she meant specifically. Who decided on the questions?

    1. As we were reading, my buddy Alex and I, came up with a set of questions to ask each other at the end of each part in the book. It was kind of a thing we did for fun to incite some fun discussion. Buddy reading is pretty fun because you can do whatever you want, really. Some people do an active chat and share that in their posts, some just write their own reviews and mention they read along with someone, and some will bring up important points noted in their discussions. For us, we asked each other 3 questions and answered each other. So if you view her post, you will see 3 different questions.
