Adult Book Review

The Veronica Speedwell Mysteries by Deanna Rabourn

Hello lovelies!

Today I am bringing you reviews of the first three books in the Veronica Speedwell Mysteries. I had requested book 3 from NetGalley on accident, and decided I would read all three books, since they came highly recommend. I have considered doing something similar once a month and calling it “Tuesday Triple Threat” or “A Day of Threes” where I read the first 3 books in a series, or an entire trilogy, and review each one along with talking about how it felt to read them back to back.

What do you think?

The Review:

Welcome to the intriguing world of Veronica Speedwell mysteries! Here you will fall prey to danger, intrigue, and a touch of the risque! You won’t be bored with this fast paced, daring adventure!

So, what do you get when you have a brave, scandalously independent young woman, an attempted kidnapping, an interlude to a carnival of curiosities, and an ill-tempered, dark, brooding recluse? Why, you have A Curious Beginning, of course! And an exciting beginning it is!

A Curious Beginning was addictive! This book was insanely fun to read! It was full of danger and intriguing twists!

Veronica Speedwell was made of “stern stuff” as she put it. She was scandalous, intelligent, and witty! She could have graduated from Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality with flying colors if it weren’t for her love of a good dalliance!

Stoker reminded me of an older Thomas Cresswell (Stalking Jack The Ripper) with his attitude and knack for making me smile and roll my eyes at the same time. He was dark and brooding, and not unlike a handsome pirate. He was brave, dashing, and seriously sarcastic.

This was such a fun read. It was like an older version of Etiquette & Espionage! I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, the characters, and the story line! It had all the things I loved most from Stalking Jack the Ripper, The Dark Days Club, and The Finishing School series!

The Review:

A Perilous Undertaking will plunge you in to the depths of danger and debauchery! As A Curious Beginning was full of curiosities and intrigue, this one is full of scandal and betrayal! Prepare to be taken on a wild ride of mystery and misdeeds!

I’ve officially been caught in Veronica’s net. Both books were insanely enjoyable. This one held a bit more mature content, but it was exciting, mysterious, and humorously and tastefully done!

At this point in the series, I 100% adore Veronica. She is sensationally witty, fierce, and entertainingly scandalous! I am also irrevocably in love with Stoker! Even though we have pretty much been shown in to the depths of his soul in this book, he still remains a dark, alluring mystery. I can’t get enough of him, and I am rooting for the pair to become even closer than they already are!

As far as the plot goes, I was close to tears from all the laughter. It was hilariously risqué. There were definitely a couple predictable moments, but the mystery was astoundingly well done, and I could not have predicted most of it.

I just honestly loved the refreshing twist on the attitudes of the women of this time in both books. Veronica lives well beyond the propriety of her sex in this time period. The tables have been turned to allow her to live with the behavior of a man, while Stoker, and his brothers, acts with more modesty. This is further confirmed by one of my new favorite characters, Lady Wellie, who is a delightfully older version of Veronica.

I am in awe at how fast I was drawn in by these books. Both have well developed mysteries, dynamic characters, and highly amusing plots! I also love how tastefully Raybourn has written in the sexual innuendos and mature content. Everything is tied in nicely to raise an eyebrow, pique a smile, and draw out a laugh without being over the top or offensive.

Date Read: February 12th, 2018

His former expedition partner has vanished from an archaeological dig with a priceless diadem unearthed from the newly discovered tomb of an Egyptian princess. This disappearance is just the latest in a string of unfortunate events that have plagued the controversial expedition, and rumors abound that the curse of the vengeful princess has been unleashed as the shadowy figure of Anubis himself stalks the streets of London.

But the perils of an ancient curse are not the only challenges Veronica must face as sordid details and malevolent enemies emerge from Stoker’s past.

The Review:

Curses, and conspiracies, and Egyptian gods, oh my! A Treacherous Curse will keep you on your toes with new adventures and threats. Veronica and Stoker are at it again with solving an Egyptian mystery on London soil! This one is striking, intriguing, and thrilling until the end!

Let me start off by saying that I have just devoured these first 3 books in a matter of four days! That’s right. These books have been insanely entertaining, full of humor, mystery, and intrigue! I have loved the fact that women have been shown to be the stronger, more cunning, sex (in a time when women were looked upon as weak), and that the attitude toward strong female characters, and men who admire them, has been one of intense empowerment!

That said, A Treacherous Curse both mirrored the attitude and hilarity of the first two books, but also offered more in regard to the emotional side of Veronica and Stoker’s friendship. I loved that we still got a well written mystery, but also saw a side of Stoker, and Veronica, we have yet to see. Both were more emotionally vulnerable and open.

The Veronica Speedwell books have quickly become one of my new favorites series. I have thoroughly enjoyed the shameless banter, the scandalous comments and attitude of Veronica, the well thought out mysteries, and the intriguing plot twists that have carried throughout the books. A Treacherous Curse was unpredictable and captivating! And, now that I have blown through these with intense excitement, I am in dire need of book 4! 4.5 stars!
